Just in! This rare 18Th C. Portuguese Faience Blue & White Figural Bear Container With Club, this is called a baiting vessel/jar. A sitting Bear holding a club box. This Bear has the coat of arms of a Portuguese family. I have only seen two other beasr like this one, all from Portugal and all with different coat of arms. Made of faience in Blue, Brown and Yellow decoration Portuguese 18th C. (4th quarter) Minor faults on the glaze, scuffs Marked J.G R Bear baiting was a really cruel blood sport from the 12-19th centuries and pitted a chained bear against dogs or another bear.
